Events and Definitions

Event organisers are presented with a variety of options when it comes to the format of their function. The following titles and definitions should assist in better understanding the nature of different affairs:

Conferences
Conferences are meetings that encourage discussions and an exchange of experience and opinions. They can be held for people of a particular industry (such as a blood transfusion conference for medical doctors) or for those of different industries (such as a postmodern art conference, which would interest architects, artists, designers, construction personnel, photographers, and so on). Delegates are usually encouraged to make presentations and speak to one another at conferences.

Conventions
Such an event is similar to a conference but is focussed more on hearing the research and information of a select group of representatives, rather than encouraging all delegates to become engaged in the presentation process.

Seminars
These are a type of academic instruction in which everyone involved is usually expected to participate. There is a representative who takes the lead. The group of attendees and participants have some experience in and knowledge of the field, therefore being able to make valuable contributions. This is far more interactive and practical than lectures.

Trade Shows
At trade shows, products and services are exhibited and / or demonstrated within an environment of other industry-related competitors. Therefore, a motor vehicle trade show will allow the designers, creators and distributors of a wide range of different motor vehicles and their components to meet in one venue and showcase their company to the public and to other industry specialists. These are usually large and are held on a regular basis (e.g. annually). Making contact on a personal level plays a major role in networking and increasing the overall sales figures.

Product Launches
A product launch is the debut of a particular product into the market, giving actual and potential consumers their first opportunity to see and use the product. These are usually esteemed functions, presenting the ideal opportunities to network.

Corporate Meetings
These employee gatherings can be formal or informal, in different venues and of different durations. They are held to:

  • Resolve particular issues
  • Provide information
  • Make requests
  • Make announcements
  • Brainstorm
  • Allow a platform for open communication

Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Every year, the managers and / or directors of the organisation converge for an AGM . These are legally required of any business. Their purpose is to discuss finances, approve audits, elect directors, confirm proposed dividends, and so on.

Business Lunches
Although these are considered to be less formal than meetings and conferences, business lunches are an important part of resolving issues and increasing your base of networks. These are generally conducted in a restaurant and are for the expense of the business.

Fundraisers
These social events are, as their name implies, held in aid of raising funds. They can be done for charity organisations, political campaigns, marketing campaigns, and so on.  They are usually made to be fun and interactive, encourage attendees to participate.

Banquets
These elaborate meals are generally enjoyed in celebration or to honour a special guest. They are characterised by great food, formal wear and entertainment.

Awards Events
To reward employees, management or investors, awards functions are held. These allow the company to announce the achievements of others and to dispense prizes (in the form of cash, holidays, etc…).

Sales Conferences
These entail the meeting of everyone involved in the sales of products and services (sales managers, sales reps, and so on) to meet and discuss the state of affairs and future plans with regard to increasing sales.
